Tucked into a maze of concrete walkways and high-rise flats, the Barbican Centre remains one of London’s most distinctive cultural landmarks. Meanwhile, the cinema quietly delivers a rich selection of world cinema, retrospectives, and film festivals often spotlighting under-the-radar directors or overlooked regions.
There’s plenty beyond the stage and screen too: three restaurants, a well-used public library, even some practice pianos tucked away. But perhaps the Barbican’s most surprising space is its conservatory a towering greenhouse tucked behind the theatre that houses more than 2,000 plant species, along with koi carp and terrapins. Open on select afternoons, it’s a curiously serene escape nestled within concrete walls.
Funded and managed by the City of London Corporation, the Barbican Centre has moved from controversial to cult favourite an enduring hub for serious culture in the heart of the city.
