Family holidays from the UK are getting more expensive, with popular destinations like Spain, Cyprus, and Turkey seeing significant price hikes. For example, a week in Cyprus this August has jumped 23%, from £950 to £1,166 per person, according to data from TravelSupermarket. Other top destinations such as Spain, Greece, Turkey, the UAE, and Portugal have all experienced price rises, with the UAE leading the pack at a 26% increase.
Only Italy and Tunisia have bucked the trend, seeing price drops of 11% and 4%, respectively. Travel agents report that many holidaymakers are now opting for shorter stays or mid-week travel to manage costs.
The price increases come amid rising operational expenses for hotels and hospitality, including higher energy bills, food prices, and wages, says Julia Lo Bue-Said, CEO of Advantage Travel Partnership. Yet, some travellers are splurging on premium packages and upgraded flights, especially on long-haul trips like Dubai.
Locals are feeling the pinch but finding ways to adapt. From booking last-minute holidays to hunting for bargains and packing light, holidaymakers are getting creative. Travel consultants also notice more people shortening trips to four or seven nights and booking closer to departure dates to save money.
If you want to keep holiday costs down, consider cheaper destinations, travel outside school holidays, book mid-week flights, and don’t hesitate to haggle with travel agents. Destinations where the pound is strong, like Turkey, Bulgaria, and Portugal, offer better value, midweek for better deals.
How to Save Money on Your Holiday
- Pick cheaper destinations. UK breaks save on travel and currency costs, but even abroad, places like Turkey, Bulgaria, and Portugal offer better value, especially when the pound is strong.
- Weigh up all-inclusive vs. local costs. Check how much eating out, drinks, and transfers cost at your destination to decide if all-inclusive is actually cheaper.
- Travel outside school holidays. Off-peak travel usually means lower prices and fewer crowds.
- Book early when possible. This helps lock in better prices, especially for peak travel dates.
- Fly mid-week. Flights tend to be cheaper on Tuesdays or Wednesdays than weekends.
- Don’t be shy to haggle. Call your travel agent and ask if they can beat prices found online.
- Be flexible with your dates and destinations. A small change in timing or location can save you a surprising amount.
