The rise of violent crypto kidnappings in France

Recently, police in Paris had to pull off a midnight rescue to free the father of a wealthy cryptocurrency entrepreneur who had been taken hostage for a multi million euro ransom. While most kidnappers might settle for a threatening note, this charming group allegedly decided to send a message by cutting off one of the man’s fingers.

The victim was snatched in broad daylight in Paris before being bundled into a delivery van and whisked away to a house in the Essonne region. The kidnappers were reportedly demanding between five and seven million euros, presumably because they heard crypto millionaires have more money than sense.

A Finger Clicking Trend?

This isn’t just an isolated bit of bad luck. France is currently dealing with a rather grisly “crypto extortion” wave. Back in January 2025, David Balland, a co founder of the crypto-wallet firm Ledger, was kidnapped from his home along with his wife. To speed up the ransom payment, those kidnappers also cut off one of his fingers and sent a video of the act to his business partner.

It seems the old saying about “not lifting a finger” has been taken far too literally by the French mob.

The GIGN to the Rescue

Thankfully, the French police are not messing about. They have been using their elite tactical units, the GIGN, to kick down doors and liberate these high value hostages. In the most recent case, they nabbed five suspects, some of whom were caught at the house where the victim was being held, while another was caught at the wheel of the getaway car.

The suspects are mostly men in their twenties, which suggests that the local youth have found a much more violent alternative to just trading NFTs. French authorities are now looking at charges that include “kidnapping with torture or barbaric acts,” which is a fancy way of saying they are going to be in prison for a very long time.

Keeping Your Keys (and Fingers) Safe

The moral of the story is quite clear: if you have made a fortune in digital coins, maybe don’t brag about it on Instagram. Criminal networks are now using Telegram and other social platforms to scout for targets, looking for anyone showing off a lavish lifestyle.

Experts are even suggesting that crypto leaders should take “home visits” from the police for security briefings. It is a strange world when your digital safety depends on your physical security, and your “private keys” are literally being threatened with a pair of bolt cutters.

So, if you are a “crypto bro” living in Paris, you might want to invest in a very sturdy door and perhaps a bit less public exposure.

At least the French police are getting plenty of practice at being the heroes in a real-life action movie.
