For many, Zanzibar is an image of turquoise water, palm trees, and calm sunsets. For Ashly Robinson, a 31‑year‑old US influencer known to followers as Ashlee Jenae, it became the setting for a tragedy that has left her family and fans searching for answers.
Robinson had been on holiday with her fiancé, Joe McCann, who is now assisting police as they investigate her sudden death. Local officers confirmed they have withheld his passport while inquiries continue, though they described him as a witness, not a suspect.
Reports from Zanzibar police say Robinson was found unconscious in her villa and taken to hospital, where she later died. Officials mentioned an attempted suicide, but her parents have voiced strong doubts about that claim, saying none of it makes sense.
Speaking to CBS News in the United States, Robinson’s mother, Yolanda Endres, described her daughter as “a light” and “a beautiful person” who had so much to look forward to. Robinson had just celebrated her birthday and become engaged during the trip. Her parents said McCann contacted them around 11 hours after the incident, offering little detail about what had happened. They later learned from the hotel, Zuri Zanzibar, that Ashly had died.
The local police chief said that hotel staff had separated the couple after what he called a “misunderstanding.” The hotel has not confirmed the claim, stating only that it is working with authorities and the US embassy.
Robinson’s family say they are cooperating with investigators and waiting for a full medical report. The US State Department expressed condolences and said it is supporting the family while ensuring American citizens’ safety abroad.
Days before her death, Robinson posted smiling photos and travel clips from sites around Tanzania, including one from a zoo near Mount Kilimanjaro. It was meant to be a joyful escape, but the shock of her final moments now lingers.
