How Labubu Dolls Took Over the World

Love ’em or scratch your head, you’ve probably heard of Labubu — those furry, elf-like dolls that are either insanely cute or delightfully bizarre, depending on who you ask. What started as a quirky little monster from Chinese toy giant Pop Mart has become a full-on global obsession.

And this isn’t just kid stuff. Nope. Celebs like Rihanna, Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian, and K-pop queen Lisa have all jumped on the Labubu bandwagon. Meanwhile, everyday fans from Shanghai to London have been camping out and sometimes even tussling over these mysterious creatures.

“You get this insane sense of achievement when you nab one in the middle of all that competition,” says Fiona Zhang, a self-proclaimed Labubu fanatic.

So, what’s the deal with Labubu anyway?

Good question! Labubu is both a character and a brand. The name itself? Total nonsense. The doll comes from “The Monsters” toy series by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung, sporting signature pointy ears, big wide eyes, and a mischievous grin showing exactly nine teeth (because why not?).

It’s plush meets vinyl, and fans are split: adorable or weird? The official story says Labubu is “kind-hearted but often accidentally causes chaos,” which sounds like every one of us on a Monday.

Labubu’s world includes friends like Zimomo (the tribe leader), Tycoco (her boyfriend), and Mokoko (her buddy). To newbies, they all kinda look the same, but hardcore fans swear they know the difference — and can’t get enough.

Pop Mart got the ball rolling years ago with “blind boxes” — surprise toy packs where you don’t know what you’re getting until you open it. Talk about a toy lottery! That helped Pop Mart grow from a Beijing variety store to a global powerhouse.

Labubu really exploded onto the scene around late 2022 when the world was ready for some quirky, imperfect fun after pandemic blues. The dolls are affordable (starting around $18-$25) and collectible — a winning combo for fans like Fiona, who admits her husband just doesn’t get why she’s so obsessed with “a doll with weird teeth.”

Then the celebrity stamp of approval hit: Lisa from Blackpink posted Labubu pics on Instagram, followed by Rihanna rocking a Labubu charm on her Louis Vuitton bag, and Kim Kardashian flaunting her collection. Even David Beckham’s daughter got in on the action!

Why is the world hooked on Labubu?

Honestly, no one knows exactly why. It’s a magical mix of timing, charm, and pure internet randomness. Chinese state media calls it a shining example of “cool China” creativity — and the world seems to agree.

One thing’s for sure: Labubu and friends have sparked an entire collector culture. Fans love the thrill of shaking those blind boxes, trying to guess if they’ve got a rare “chaser” doll. Desmond Tan from Singapore says it’s like a game: feeling the box, guessing the prize, and hitting the jackpot when the special doll pops out.

So, adorable or weird? Maybe both. But one thing’s clear: Labubu’s wild ride is far from over, and the world can’t seem to get enough.
