Remember when every middle class student in Delhi had a Canadian flag on their vision board? It used to be so simple. You would sign up for a random course in a town you could not pronounce, flip a few burgers, and eventually bag that lovely permanent residency. Now, it seems the maple leaf is losing its shine. At education fairs in India, parents are ditching the Canada brochures and looking at Italy, Germany, or Australia instead. It turns out that when a dream becomes a gamble, people start looking for a different casino.
Applications for Canada have plummeted by nearly 80 per cent according to some consultants. Back in 2023, Indians made up over half of the international students arriving in the country. Fast forward to late 2025, and that number has crashed to just 8 per cent. Canada is basically the nightclub that everyone loved until the bouncers got mean and the drinks became too expensive to buy.
The Great Visa Vibe Check
The Canadian government finally looked at the numbers and panicked. They put a massive cap on new study permits and doubled the amount of money students need to prove they actually have. You now need over 20,000 Canadian dollars just to show you can afford a bed and some poutine. For many families, that is a huge chunk of cash to risk on a visa that is now more likely to be rejected than accepted.
The rejection rate for study permits jumped to over 50 per cent recently. Officials also scrapped the fast track visa scheme because they worried too many non genuine students were using it as a backdoor to get in. It turns out that if you tell everyone they can live in your house, eventually the floorboards start to groan. The government decided to fix the housing crisis by making it much harder for students to get through the front door.
Degrees or Just a Plane Ticket?
There is a big difference between going to Canada to study and going there to escape. Elite schools like McGill University are doing just fine. Their students are actually there for the books. The real carnage is happening in the smaller vocational colleges that popped up like mushrooms after the pandemic. These places were basically just visa factories disguised as schools.
Many students arrived only to find that their expensive diploma was about as useful as a chocolate teapot. Jobs are harder to find, and rent is so high that some graduates are moving back to India because they simply cannot make ends meet. It is a bit embarrassing to go abroad for a better life only to realise you were better off staying in Delhi with a decent internet connection.
Still a Bet Worth Taking?
Despite the gloom, some people are still determined to make the trip. If you have a sister in Toronto or a cousin in Vancouver, the country still feels like home. Canada still offers a three year work permit after graduation, which is a massive carrot on a very long stick. But that carrot is looking a bit withered these days.
Prime Minister Mark Carney recently visited India to try and fix the diplomatic frostiness. There are new scholarships and partnerships on the way to tempt the best and brightest back. However, the days of using a basic diploma as a guaranteed ticket to a new life are over. For the average student, Canada has gone from a sure thing to a very expensive coin toss.
