Nothing sells tickets quite like the promise of a massive comeback, especially when it involves combat sports’ favourite trash talking Irishman. Five full years after snapping his leg in the Octagon, 37 year-old Conor McGregor strode into Las Vegas for UFC 329, hyping his rematch against Max Holloway as the greatest comeback in sporting history.
Instead, the bout lasted 69 seconds before his body threw in the towel for him.
If you blinked, grabbed a brew, or looked away to check a text message, you missed the entire main event. McGregor attempted an ambitious flying kick to open the bout, landed like a sack of potatoes, and immediately blew out his right knee.
A Spectacular Collapse in Record Time
After strutting out to the arena speakers blaring Notorious B.I.G., McGregor barely spent a single minute trading blows before clutching his joint in agony. He stumbled around the mat like a newborn giraffe, trying to shake off what UFC boss Dana White later suspected was a completely blown ACL.
Holloway, looking almost embarrassed to be involved in such a bizarre spectacle, threw a single light leg kick before the referee mercifully stepped in to stop the bout.

McGregor’s long layoff already featured plenty of non-sporting headlines, including civil court liabilities and a suspension for missing drug tests. Yet somehow, fight promoters managed to convince thousands of fans that the Irishman was back to his destructive best.
Holloway, ever the sportsman, offered a cheekily sympathetic post fight assessment. “I guess I had him weak in the knees,” Holloway cracked, before offering to run the fight back once McGregor repairs his ligaments.
Whether 37 year old McGregor actually recovers to step into the Octagon again remains anyone’s guess. For now, his big return serves as a swift reminder that father time remains undefeated in the cage.
