Well, this is an awkward one. Former Arsenal footballer Thomas Partey has found himself in a spot of serious legal bother. The Ghanaian international, a free agent after his contract with the Gunners expired, has been granted conditional bail after appearing in a London court on multiple charges of rape and sexual assault.
The 32 year old, who is reportedly set to join Spanish club Villarreal, is accused of five counts of rape against two women and one count of sexual assault against a third. The alleged offences took place between 2021 and 2022.
The conditions of his bail are what you might expect: he can’t contact the women and has to keep the police updated on his address and travel plans. The fact that a Chief Magistrate had to mention that Partey is “no longer employed in this country and playing in Spain now” during the discussion of his bail conditions is a little surreal. It’s almost as if the justice system is having to adapt to the peculiar lives of the ultra rich.
The Opportunity to “Clear His Name”
Partey’s lawyer has stated that he “denies all the charges against him” and “welcomed the opportunity to finally clear his name.” He is due to appear at London’s Old Bailey court on 2 September.
This news comes just days after his contract with Arsenal officially ended. A spokesperson for the club, in a statement that was probably crafted by a team of lawyers, simply said, “The player’s contract ended on 30 June. Due to ongoing legal proceedings, the club is unable to comment on the case.” Which, you know, makes sense.
Partey, a player with a history of winning the Spanish title and the Europa League, now faces a very different kind of battle. It’s a sobering reminder that a professional career, no matter how successful, can be overshadowed by what happens off the pitch. So many talented footballers, film actors, musicians, and presenters are facing investigations of sexual offences. One has to wonder why these rising stars put themselves in these situations, potentially ruining their careers for what is, in the grand scheme of things, so easily avoidable.
