A German court has ruled that American tech startup Suno broke copyright rules by using protected tracks to train its AI music generator.
The Munich Regional Court sided with German performance rights group GEMA, declaring that artificial intelligence models built on stolen intellectual property have no protection under European law. In court, GEMA played side-by-side audio comparisons of original tracks alongside Suno generated outputs. The similarities were so glaring that the judge could not ignore them. The AI generator literally memorised and spat out bits of “Daddy Cool,” “Mambo No. 5,” and “Forever Young.”
The Absolute Tech Bros Delusion
So how did the geniuses behind Suno defend taking millions of copyrighted songs without consent?
Naturally, they hid behind the usual wall of tech jargon and corporate excuses. They claimed their algorithm merely learned abstract mathematical patterns, and that any resemblance to real songs was purely the user fault.
The court threw out those pathetic excuses in record time:
- Bypassing technical barriers. Suno illegally stream ripped audio off YouTube by cracking YouTube cipher protections.
- Memorizing actual songs. The AI stored exact melodies and lyrics instead of just learning generic musical styles.
- Profiting off human talent. The tech platform charged subscriptions while ignoring repeated requests to buy proper copyright licenses.
Silicon Valley executives think they can scrape the sum total of human art, stick it into a server, and sell it back to us as progress. They call it innovation, but normal people call it wholesale theft. The German judges have handed down a massive reality check, ordering Suno to disclose its revenues so GEMA can calculate millions in legal damages.
