Gary Lineker will present his final episode of Match of the Day this Sunday, officially ending a long standing career with the BBC that spanned more than three decades. The 64 year old, who first took over from Des Lynam in 1999, had been expected to continue fronting coverage of major football tournaments including the FA Cup and 2026 World Cup, but has now confirmed he will step away from all BBC presenting duties.
The decision follows backlash over a social media post Lineker shared, which included an image widely criticised for containing antisemitic tropes. Though he later stated he had not seen the illustration and apologised, the incident was viewed as a tipping point, with his role deemed increasingly untenable by BBC management. He described the reposting as an error and said stepping down now felt like the responsible thing to do.
Lineker’s social media activity has drawn criticism in the past, with ongoing debates over the balance between impartiality and personal expression. His temporary suspension in 2023 over comments about government asylum policy already tested the boundaries between broadcaster and activist. This latest controversy proved more difficult to navigate.

Beyond the broadcast studio, Lineker has built a parallel career in digital media as a co-founder of Goalhanger Podcasts, creators of popular titles like The Rest Is History and its spin-offs. The split with the BBC also marks the end of the licensing deal for Goalhanger content on BBC Sounds, which will expire later this year.
