It seems that a new plan by President Donald Trump to put a big 50% tax on Brazilian goods, including coffee, could really hurt the small scale coffee farmers in Brazil. These are the folks who produce a huge two-thirds of all the coffee grown in the country!
Imagine Jose Natal da Silva, a coffee farmer in Brazil. He’s not just worrying about pests attacking his coffee plants; he’s losing sleep over this new tariff. Brazil, you see, is the world’s biggest coffee exporter, sending out a massive 85 percent of all the coffee they grow. And guess who buys the most of it? The US, taking in 16 percent of Brazil’s coffee exports. So, this new tax could seriously hurt how much coffee the US buys from Brazil and, in turn, how much these hardworking farmers get paid.
Experts are really worried that this new tax will make Brazilian coffee less appealing, especially for those smaller, family run farms. These farms don’t have as many resources as the big ones to deal with tough times or try to sell their coffee to new countries. As if things weren’t hard enough, last year’s extreme weather (thanks, climate change!) already messed up their crops. And now, the price of the type of coffee they grow, Arabica, has dropped by 33 percent since February. Jose Natal da Silva, who grows 40,000 coffee trees, put it simply: “We struggle for years, and suddenly we might lose everything.” It just goes to show you, you give an inch to political drama, and it can take a mile out of someone’s livelihood.
Another farmer, Paulo Menezes Freitas, who has 35,000 trees, is worried he might have to stop growing coffee altogether.He also pointed out that this new tax could make essential things like machinery and aluminium, which farmers need, much more expensive. He said it feels like “the ground is crumbling under us.”
Now, the big coffee exporters in Brazil are trying to stay positive, hoping that US buyers can’t simply stop buying their beans. But out on the farms, the small growers are desperately hoping this new tax gets taken away before their lives are completely turned upside down.
This tariff seems to be linked to some political tension, as Donald Trump has spoken out against the trial of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. For the small farmers, this tax means even thinner profits, especially as the weather becomes more and more unpredictable. Prices for Arabica coffee have already fallen a lot, making it even harder for these growers. Farmers like Jose Natal da Silva have to grow other things like bananas and eggs to make ends meet, because the profits from coffee are so tiny. In places like Porciuncula and Varre-Sai, coffee farming is literally how most families survive.
Experts agree that these small farmers will be hit the hardest because they simply don’t have the means to find new places to sell their coffee or handle such big money losses. And if the cost of important farming tools also goes up because of the tariff? Well, that’s just another nail in the coffin.
