If you thought global trade rules could not possibly get any sillier, Donald Trump has just held his beer. The US president marked the end of his temporary trade fees by slapping fresh import taxes on sixty trade partners. His team claims these countries violate forced labour laws, which handily gives him an excuse to tax almost every single item entering America.
According to the US Trade Representative, the new tariffs target nations accounting for ninety nine point four percent of American imports. So, unless you buy your goods exclusively from Antarctica, these import taxes affect you.
A Global Dragnet for Import Taxes
The new duties range between ten and twelve point five percent, replacing the temporary blanket fee that Trump rolled out back in February.
To make the rules clear, the administration added a few specific exemptions:
- Fossil fuels like oil and gas escape the tax, along with rare items that the US simply cannot make at home.
- Metal products like steel and aluminium avoid the new fees because Trump already taxed them under earlier national security laws.
World Leaders Express Absolute Disbelief
The justification for these sweeping tariffs raised plenty of eyebrows around the world. The Trump administration invoked Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which lets a president punish countries with unfair trade practices.
Nations hit by the decision immediately voiced their frustration. Australia called the move completely unjustified, New Zealand accused the US of grasping at straws to keep tax rates high, and Brazil promised to haul Washington before the World Trade Organisation.
Small business owners inside the US filed lawsuits instantly, as economists warn that rising energy costs and huge tech spending will drive prices higher for ordinary shoppers. To make matters worse, Trump already promised two more rounds of tariffs, targeting foreign factory capacity and European fines on US tech giants.
