It seems the Polar Vortex has decided to take a winter holiday in the Deep South, and it is not exactly bringing the sunshine. America is currently being hit by a “life threatening” winter storm that has turned half the country into a giant ice cube. We are talking about conditions so brutal that even the US Senate cancelled a vote. When politicians decide it is too cold to go to work and argue, you know the situation is serious.
At least seven people have died so far, with most cases linked to the biting cold in places like Louisiana and Texas. These are states where people usually expect mild winters and maybe a light jacket. Instead, they are facing temperatures 20C below the seasonal average. It turns out that when an “arctic siege” hits a place that doesn’t own a snow shovel, things go south very quickly.

Why is this Happening?
The meteorologists are pointing the finger at a wobbly Polar Vortex. Usually, this ring of freezing Arctic air stays up north where it belongs. But when the winds weaken, the cold air plunges south like a guest who doesn’t know when to leave the party. As this freezing air hits the mild air in the south, it creates a massive storm front that is now crawling towards New England.
In Kentucky and Virginia, authorities are dealing with hundreds of car crashes because people are finding out the hard way that tyres do not like ice. Meanwhile, in New York, the Governor has warned everyone to stay off the roads, describing the weather as “bone chilling.” Even Canada is getting a fresh layer of snow, with Ontario expecting up to 30cm.
The Long Thaw
The bad news is that this ice isn’t going anywhere fast. Forecasters say it will be a very slow melt, which means recovery efforts will be about as fast as a snail on a frozen pavement. Some experts think climate change is making the Polar Vortex act like a toddler in a supermarket, causing it to wander into places it shouldn’t be.
