Bellarmine Mugabe, the youngest son of the late Robert Mugabe, just entered a guilty plea in a South African court. Why are we not surprised? The apple does not fall too far from the tree, and this latest mess confirms that the family tradition of drama is alive and well.
It seems like the whole family is corrupt, and they certainly know how to find trouble no matter where they land. Bellarmine pleaded guilty to pointing a firearm and being in South Africa illegally. These charges followed a shooting incident at his home in the posh Johannesburg suburb of Hyde Park. A 23 year old man was shot twice in the back as he tried to flee the property. He ended up in hospital in critical condition.
The strangest part of this courtroom theatre is the missing evidence. Authorities searched the house, but they still cannot find the gun. Bellarmine faced an attempted murder charge at first, but that charge vanished once his co accused, Tobias Matonhodze, admitted to the shooting. Now, both men have offered a very generous deal to the court. They promise to pack their bags and head back to Zimbabwe at their own expense if the judge spares them a prison sentence. How incredibly kind of them to offer to leave.
This is not the first time Bellarmine has made headlines for the wrong reasons. He faced arrest in 2024 for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Zimbabwe. A year later, he had another run in with a security guard at a mining site. It is almost as if he has a talent for finding conflict.
Robert Mugabe held onto power for 37 years before a coup finally ended his reign in 2017. His son seems determined to keep the family name in the spotlight, even if the headlines are rarely flattering. We can only wonder what the next chapter in this saga will look like.
