Nothing screams peak modern existence like sitting in the back of a taxi, tapping on your phone to book a hotel room, and ordering a burger to that same room. All through one single app. Welcome to the future, friends. Uber clearly decided that they are not satisfied with just driving you around. They want to be the only app you ever open on your phone.
Uber recently rolled out a new hotel booking feature for users in the US. They joined forces with Expedia to make this happen. You can now browse for a place to crash without ever leaving the Uber ecosystem. If you pay for the Uber One subscription, the company promises discounts and cash back. Even regular users might find a bargain. One travel reporter checked the app and found a Hilton room for less than the price on the hotel website.
We know why this is happening. The Uber CEO previously held the top job at Expedia. It feels like a reunion between old friends. Expedia plans to add Uber ride bookings to their own app by June. It seems like the two companies finally decided to stop dancing around each other and just get married.
The tech giant also wants to use AI to let you book rides with your voice. They are testing a room service feature for deliveries to your hotel door. If you order an expensive Uber Black ride, you can even ask your driver to have coffee or snacks ready. Because apparently, we have lost the ability to visit a cafe on our own.
Is this true convenience, or are we just becoming too reliant on one app for every single part of our day. You decide. Personally, I like having a few different apps for different things. But I suppose efficiency is the only thing that matters in the world of digital travel and smartphone apps today.
