A large memorial service is planned in Arizona for Charlie Kirk, the founder of Turning Point USA, who was tragically shot and killed earlier this month.
President Donald Trump, and several other Republican figures are scheduled to speak at the event, which Turning Point USA has titled Building a Legacy: Remembering Charlie Kirk. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who recently assumed the role of the organisation’s chief executive, is also expected to address attendees.
“We’re going to celebrate the life of a great man today,” President Trump said before departing Washington, D.C., for Arizona.
Charlie Kirk, 31, was shot on 10 September during a university event in Utah. A 22 year old suspect has been charged with murder. Authorities have stated that the suspect acted alone. Kirk was a prominent figure within the US conservative movement, known for his activism among young people through social media and his work with Turning Point USA, which he founded in 2012 at age 18.
Kirk was a polarising figure, drawing both support and criticism for his political positions, including strong stances on border security, Islam, and climate change. Supporters have praised his ability to engage young voters through social media platforms such as TikTok, while critics have taken issue with some of his more controversial statements.
In the aftermath of Kirk’s death, public discussion has emerged regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident. Media personality Candace Owens has raised questions about footage from the scene, claiming that two individuals moved Kirk’s chair and removed a camera shortly after the shooting. Owens reports that she has spoken with one of the men, who stated that his intention was to secure the footage for authorities. She has expressed scepticism towards federal officials and noted that, in the footage she reviewed, no visible blood was apparent, prompting further discussion about the incident.
