The 2026 Winter Olympics kicked off last night at the San Siro Stadium in Milan, and it is safe to say northern Italy is currently a bit of a circus. Branded as Milano Cortina 2026, the Games are spread across the region, returning to Cortina d’Ampezzo for the first time in 70 years. While the athletes are busy waxing their skis, the rest of us are busy tracking the political drama and some truly bizarre cheating scandals.
Skimo and Security Scares
First up is the debut of “skimo,” or ski mountaineering. This sport involves athletes running up a mountain and then skiing back down again. It sounds like a very tiring metaphor for life, and we can only hope it lasts longer than ski ballet or military patrol.
On the ground, things are getting a bit spicy with the arrival of US Ice agents. Apparently, Italy invited the American immigration enforcement agency to help with counter terrorism. The Italian foreign minister had to pinky promise the public that these agents would not be turning up with machine guns and masks, though the locals are still far from thrilled.
The Crotch Crackdown
However, the real head turner this year is the “penis scandal.” Yes, you read that correctly. The World Anti-Doping Agency is currently investigating claims that male ski jumpers are using hyaluronic acid injections to increase the size of their genitalia.
Why, you ask? It is all about aerodynamics. A larger “package” allows for a larger ski suit, which reduces drag and increases lift. Science suggests a tiny 2cm boost in circumference could add over five metres to a jump. To stop this cheeky biological engineering, officials are reportedly microchipping the athletes’ crotches. It gives a whole new meaning to the term “tech suit.”
Unlikely Stars and Family Feuds
It wouldn’t be the Olympics without some drama in the stands. Jutta Leerdam, the speed skater and fiancée of Jake Paul, is already under fire for her “diva” antics after flying to Italy on a private jet. Meanwhile, the Jamaican bobsleigh team is back to keep the “Cool Runnings” dream alive.
We also have the “Individual Neutral Athletes” from Russia and Belarus. They are allowed to compete despite the invasion of Ukraine, provided they stay neutral. Of course, “neutral” is a loose term, as several approved athletes supposedly have links to pro-war activities.
Family Values
Finally, we have the Macuga sisters trying to dominate the slopes as a trio, while a 17 year old Mexican skier joins his 46 year old mother on the team. It is a lovely family affair, provided no one gets their crotch chip scanned the wrong way.
Whether it is mountaineering or “enhancement” scandals, the next few weeks promise to be anything but boring. Just remember to keep your eyes on the finish line and your hands off the syringes.
