Let us talk about the British press. The fleet of Fleet Street vultures who have somehow managed, once again, to hound a man straight into his grave and then have the unmitigated cheek to monetise the bloody obituary.
I am talking, of course, about Professor Jason Arday. A brilliant academic who made history in 2023 as the youngest professor ever appointed at Cambridge University. A man who overcame immense childhood disadvantage and built a stellar career against every single cosmic weight stacked against him.
He faced allegations of plagiarism over his doctoral thesis. Now, academic integrity matters. If there are errors, investigate them. But standard protocol for academic misconduct is a slow, boring, internal university tribunal that nobody outside of a dusty faculty lounge ever reads about.
Instead, the UK media saw a young, successful scholar in a high position and went absolutely feral.
Look at the shear, unhinged numbers of articles these outlets spat out in a matter of days:
The Daily Mail: 53 articles.
The Times: 41 articles.
The Daily Telegraph: 33 articles in 16 days, sometimes dropping four separate hit pieces in a single afternoon.
The Spectator: 30 articles.
GB News & The BBC: 15 articles each, with GB News running non-stop broadcast segments every hour on the hour.
In total, media tracking showed around 250 articles published in just a few weeks across right wing and mainstream outlets. Nearly 250 articles! We have actual politicians on the take, structural public services collapsing, and local infrastructure failing, but Fleet Street decided that a sociology thesis was the single biggest threat to Western civilisation!
Why? Because he was their perfect target for a culture war. A chance to scream to their readership about diversity initiatives.
And now, Jason Arday is dead at 41. Resigned, broken by a relentless, vicious media pile on, and gone.
And if this horrifying playbook sounds intimately familiar, it is because it is the exact same blueprint they used on Meghan Markle. The exact same machinery. For years, the British press subjected Meghan to a non-stop, daily bombardment of malicious, absurd hit pieces, tearing down her character, monetising public outrage, and turning her very existence into a national referendum. They hounded her until she literally had to flee the country to protect her life and mental health. They wanted the exact same outcome for her that they just got with Jason Arday. It is a sickening pattern of media hunting.
And do you know what makes it even more vile? The sheer, blinding hypocrisy.
Two Tier Justice
Let us play a game of spot the difference. Two Cambridge academics. Two plagiarism controversies.
In 2023, Dr. William O’Reilly, an Associate Professor in Early Modern History at Cambridge, faced a university tribunal after being accused of plagiarising an undergraduate’s work word-for-word in an academic journal. The tribunal sat, looked at the evidence, and upheld the complaint. They found him guilty of copying large portions of a student’s text. But the university decided it was “negligence, not malice,” slapped him on the wrist, and let him keep his job, his title, and his post.
Where were the 53 Daily Mail articles for Dr. O’Reilly? Where were the 33 front page outrage features in the Telegraph branding him a threat to academic standards? Where were the paid social media ad campaigns from The Times hounding his family?
Google William O’Reilly and Jason Arday. Read the coverage and compare the sheer volume for yourself. Why did one man get a polite pass from the institution while the other got a 250 article mob execution by press?
It is not about plagiarism. It was never about plagiarism. It was about blood, clicks, and a vicious culture war. And until these press vultures face actual legal repercussions for driving human beings to the brink, the body count is just going to keep on rising.
Julia Hartley-Brewer, a presenter on TalkTV, on Saturday said: “The only person responsible for Jason Arday’s death is Jason Arday.”
“He was a liar and a fraud who was rightly exposed for what he really was by academics and journalists who were simply doing their job,” she added. “This isn’t about right and left. It’s about right and wrong,” she said on X, less than 24 hours after his death.
A vigil organised by group Stand Up To Racism is set to take place on Monday evening in Trafalgar Square.
