Just 40 seconds in the air — that’s all Air India Flight 171 managed before crashing into a crowded neighbourhood in Ahmedabad, in one of India’s most puzzling aviation disasters in recent memory.
Now, investigators have the daunting task of piecing together exactly what went wrong in those terrifying seconds after takeoff. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people and nearly 100 tonnes of fuel, lifted off at 13:39 local time but quickly sent out a mayday call — its final message before plunging down in flames.
What Could Have Gone Wrong?
Captain Kishore Chinta, a veteran crash investigator, calls this “the rarest of the rare” — a controlled flight crashing into terrain almost immediately after takeoff. Experts are scratching their heads:
