Looks like Sauber’s getting a British makeover and no, it’s not just switching to tea and biscuits.
The Swiss-based F1 team is opening a shiny new UK base this year, as part of its pre-Audi era glow-up ahead of the German giant’s official debut in 2026. The goal? To get a proper taste of that engineering brainpower Britain brews so well in its so-called Motorsport Valley (aka the Oxfordshire–Northamptonshire–Silverstone triangle, where everyone either builds cars or knows someone who does).
Sauber’s current HQ is tucked away in Hinwil, Switzerland lovely place, unless you’re trying to lure top engineers who’d rather not uproot their families and swap pub Sundays for Alpine hikes. Hence the UK move. Engineers love a good team hop, especially when it doesn’t involve changing postcodes or dragging their kids out of school.
Audi’s statement was full of corporate charm, saying the new UK base would give them access to “the world’s largest motorsport expertise and talent pool.” Translation: We need fresh brains, and they’re all here.
No final location has been picked, but Bicester, Silverstone, and Milton Keynes are all in the running. Basically, places where you can find an F1 gearbox in a corner shop.
Don’t worry though Hinwil isn’t being left behind. The UK site will be an extension of the design department, not a replacement. The main build still happens back at base camp, and Audi’s power unit programme is humming away in Neuburg, Germany.
Team boss Mattia Binotto chimed in with the vision stuff: “We want a collaborative network across Hinwil and the UK,” which is code for: Let’s build fast cars, wherever the brains are.
To be fair, Sauber could use the boost. They finished dead last in 2024. Audi knows they’ve got a mountain to climb before they can even sniff the front of the grid. But hey new office, new people, new hope.
Let’s just hope it’s less Sauber and more sorted by 2026.
